Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today is not just a holiday.
Today is not just a day off school and work.
Today is a day to celebrate a man who tried to pull a nation together.
Today is a day to think about what he did (what he said) and try to make his ideas work.
Unfortunately, most people (especially kids) think today is just a holiday to be off school (to play games or sleep in). They don't use the day to think about what was said or done.
Unfortunately, many people disregard the great man that was Martin Luther King, Jr.
I think having a day to contemplate what he did/said is great. However, I think it would be greater if we really worked to keep his ideas at work.
Did you know that there are many schools that are very segregated today? Money separates the schools. There are many "rich white" schools and "poor black" schools again today. There is no law to keep them that way, but society is making it impossible for all kids to get the same education. You go to school based on where you live. If you can't afford to live where the "rich" kids go to school, then you are stuck in a school that is worse.
Does anyone else see anything wrong with that?
So today, while we are enjoying our day off--while we are hustling to get just one more thing accomplished before we go back to work tomorrow--let's take a moment to think about Dr. King's ideas! Let's try to make his plan of people being TOGETHER work!
