Time Management in Our Homeschool

Do you ever feel like you have 1,000,000 things to do an no time to do them?

I almost always feel like that, but when it came to homeschooling, we had to figure out the schedule that worked for us.  Not just for activities, but for daily lessons and how long they should take.

Time management is NOT my strongest characteristic.  It's not Chasity's either!

This year, we tried several different things in order to make our daily schedule actually work!

What did we try first?
We approached it like homework from public school.  She had to get the lessons done... no matter how long it took.  So, in the beginning, she had some 10-2 hour days. There were lots of tears (mine and hers). We just hoped it would get easier.

How did we fix it?
Then we decided to allot time for each subject. She still had 8-10 hours a day of work.  That was a little better, but not enough for us.

What finally worked?
We finally allotted time for each subject and used a timer. At first, this seemed very rigid.  She would set the timer, start working, and then when the timer sounded, she would stop working. That was a lot better. She went to only having 5-6 hours a day of work instead of 10.

What is the system?
                She sets the timer.
                She does her work.
When the timer goes off, she stops. (She may finish the current question/paragraph/problem).
If she is not completely finished with the subject, she moves on anyways and then at the end of the day, she comes back to it like "homework".  MOST days, she did not have to come back.  We determined how long each subject was taking and used that as a guide for how long to set the timer.

PROS:
More efficient, More organized, More independence, Get more done in less time

CONS:
Seems rigid to start, Sometimes forget to set timer, Takes time to figure out how long subjects will take

We figured out what works for us.

How did you figure out how to manage time in your homeschool?
